Open Circle Theatre is a professional theatre company dedicated to advancing careers in the arts for people with disabilities through professional integrated performances, educational programming, and inclusive community events. OCT advances the idea that disability can enhance the artistic experience, inspire aesthetic innovation, and influence a community to become accessible for all. Through the arts, a community can be brought together to celebrate all abilities and embrace similarities rather than differences, while still elevating the unique contributions and culture made by people with disabilities.
At Open Circle Theatre, we are committed to building a radically inclusive, accessible, and intersectional space. As a company led primarily by white disabled women right now, we are continuously working to move beyond the framework of the disability rights movement to Disability Justice. We want to center the voices of those most impacted—especially disabled artists of color and disabled queer, trans, and gender-expansive creatives. Like the name says, the circle is open!
Our approach to diversity and inclusion is not an afterthought; we embed it in our leadership, our creative processes, and our culture of collective access and accountability. We reject hierarchies that silence or diminish lived experience, and we move at the speed of access and care, not capitalist urgency. We are still learning, still listening, and remain deeply committed to growing this work with integrity, accountability, and love.
Open Circle acknowledges that its theatrical work happens on occupied, unceded territory: the ancestral homeland of the NACOTCHTANK, whose descendants belong to the Piscataway peoples.
